A Ilha de Armona ou, mais invulgarmente, Ilha da Armona é uma ilha da Ria Formosa no concelho de Olhão, no Algarve, Portugal. A ilha está integrada no Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. A ligação à cidade de Olhão é feita diariamente por um ferry, de hora a hora, no verão, com um horário um pouco mais reduzido no inverno.

A ilha é constituída por praias voltadas para a Ria Formosa e outras voltadas para o mar.

 Dispõe de um parque de campismo e de cabanas de aluguer, sendo também possível alugar casas particulares. Existem ainda restaurantes perto do molhe, alguns deles com tradição familiar já passados de geração para geração. Na ilha não circulam carros só apenas veículos motorizados de emergência e da limpeza.

Os adeptos dos desportos náuticos também encontram na ilha de Armona um bom local para os praticarem. Canoagem, vela e mergulho são apenas alguns exemplos. A pesca recreativa é também bastante popular.

Para além da parte habitada da ilha, existe uma secção de cariz mais selvagem, onde é possível encontrar, por exemplo, camaleões e outros exemplares da fauna local.

Em Junho de 2019 a Ilha da Armona estreou-se com a bandeira azul de umas das praias mais limpas do Mundo.

Armona Island or, more unusually, Armona Island is an island in the Ria Formosa in the municipality of Olhão in the Algarve, Portugal. The island is integrated in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. The connection to the city of Olhão is made daily by a ferry, hourly in summer, with a slightly reduced schedule in winter.

The island consists of beaches facing the Ria Formosa and facing the sea. There is a campsite and cabins for rent, and it is also possible to rent private houses. There are also restaurants near the breakwater, some of them with family traditions passed down from generation to generation. There are no cars on the island, only emergency and cleaning vehicles.

Water sports enthusiasts will also find Armona Island a good place to practice them. Canoeing, sailing and diving are just a few examples. Recreational fishing is also very popular.

In addition to the inhabited part of the island, there is a section of a more wild nature, where it is possible to find, for example, chameleons and other specimens of the local fauna.

In June 2019 the island of Armona made its debut with the blue flag of one of the cleanest beaches in the world.

Era uma vez um amigo: «Que tesouro é este? Nunca tinha ouvido falar!...»

Um amigo de Olhão trabalhou quase três décadas em Bruxelas. Voltou para Portugal há uns três anos.
Tem um irmão que tem o passatempo de passear de barco pela Ria Formosa. 

Esse amigo, o Fernando, recebeu dois casais amigos de Bruxelas que vieram mais uma vez ao Algarve. Que já conheciam bem e que adoram.
Como dinheiro não é problema para eles, estão muito habituados a bons hoteis de 5 estrelas. Vila Moura, Lagos, Sagres, Quinta do Lago, conhecem tudo.

Mas o Fernando quis surpreendê-los, então pediu ao irmão para lhes dar a conhecer a Ria Formosa.
Lá foram, no pequeno barco do 'Carlinhos', percorreram todas as ilhas-barreira, e acostaram em vários pontos para mergulharem. 

Na Ilha da Armona, passaram umas horas numa praia gigante de águas cristalinas, completamente deserta.

Não queriam acreditar que ainda existiam praias assim, a perder de vista.

Quando se estavam a despedir, de regresso a Bruxelas, os amigos do Fernando desabafaram: «Conhecemos dezenas de sítios maravilhosos no mundo inteiro, mas nunca tinha estado assim numa praia deserta tão maravilhosa, como esta da Ilha da Armona».

O Fernando conta esta história como uma anedota, porque muitas pessoas que o valor de um sítio onde se passa férias está relacionado com o facto de dispor de hotéis de 5 estrelas, parques de estacionamento, etc etc... 

Para muita gente, o segredo já não é esse: 
O segredo está em sítios mal conhecidos, pouco frequentados, ainda com uma natureza pura. 

A Ilha da Armona, por ser uma ilha-barreira, e ser proibido fazer novas construções, vai permanecer aquele local de natureza pura, condições simples mas as suficientes para se passar uns bons dias de descanso.

O segredo da Ilha da Armona é esse.
Ainda bem que poucas pessoas a conhecem...

Once upon a time a friend said, "What treasure is this? I've never heard of it!..."

A friend from Olhão worked for almost three decades in Brussels. He returned to Portugal about three years ago.

He has a brother who has the hobby of sailing on the Ria Formosa. 

This friend, Fernando, received two couple friends from Brussels who came once again to the Algarve. They already knew them well and they love it.

As money is no problem for them, they are very used to good 5 star hotels. Vila Moura, Lagos, Sagres, Quinta do Lago, they know it all.

But Fernando wanted to surprise them, so he asked his brother to show them the Ria Formosa.

So off they went, in 'Carlinhos' little boat, round all the barrier islands, and moored at various points to dive. 

On Armona Island, they spent a few hours on a giant beach with crystal clear water, completely deserted.

They couldn't believe there were still beaches like this, as far as the eye could see.

As they were saying goodbye on their way back to Brussels, Fernando's friends said to him: "We have been to dozens of wonderful places all over the world, but I have never been to such a wonderful deserted beach like this one on Armona Island".

Fernando tells this story as a joke, because many people think that the value of a place where you spend your holidays is related to the fact that it has 5 star hotels, car parks, etc... 

For many people, the secret is no longer that: 

The secret is in places that are little known, little frequented, still with a pure nature. 

Armona Island, being a barrier island, and being forbidden to build new constructions, will remain that place of pure nature, simple but enough conditions to spend a good days rest.

That is the secret of Armona Island.

It's a good thing that few people know about it...

OS CAMALEÕES

Os camaleões são a principal atração na ilha. Há 10 anos era comum vê-los nas árvores.
Hoje, infelizmente, é mais raro. Mesmo assim, por vezes aparecem. 

Chameleons are the main attraction on the island. Ten years ago it was common to see them in the trees. Today, unfortunately, it's rarer. Still, sometimes they do appear. 

Este apareceu  no nosso quintal em 2020.

Se vier de comboio, são 14 minutos a pé até aos barcos para a Ilha da Armona.

If you come by train, it is a 14-minute walk to the boats to Armona Island.

Da história antiga da ilha aos dias de hoje

Por relatos dos mais antigos, sabemos que nos anos 80 a ilha não tinha nem eletricidade nem água. 
Eram muito menos as casas, mas as condições eram muito escassas.

Com o tempo muita coisa melhorou.
A Câmara de Olhão ligou a água canalizada por conduta através da ria, passou a haver eletricidade, foram arranjados caminhos de cimento que ligam a parte com construções da ilha. Há candeeiros, há estruturas para combate a incêndios, há até geradores para situações de falta de eletricidade.

Muito melhorou.
Nos últimos anos ganhou outros atributos. Os acessos à praia em trilhos de madeira servem agora as duas frentes de praia, a sul e a leste.

Placas indicativas dos valores naturais da ilha, pedidos para os cuidados a ter. Latas para as beatas, bancos de descanso. Está tudo muito melhor.

Mas o que se nota mais comparando fotos atuais com fotos antigas da ilha é que as casas estão todas a ser renovadas. Materiais mais resistentes, tudo está melhor e mais bonito. 
Os jardins estão aprimorados. Não é raro ver jardins verdes, com rega automática. 

Os restaurantes estão mais modernos, com melhores serviços.
Basta ver a esplanada do 'belga', como nós dizíamos.
Agora chama-se LanaCosta e é um fabuloso restaurante.
Um bocadinho mais caro que os outros, mas o serviço é do melhor.

  

From the accounts of the elders, we know that in the 1980s the island had neither electricity nor water. 

There were far fewer houses, but the conditions were very poor.

With time, a lot has improved.

The Olhão municipality connected piped water to the Ria, electricity was introduced, cement paths were laid connecting the built-up part of the island. There are lamps, fire-fighting structures, even generators for when there's a power failure.

Much has improved.

In recent years it has gained other attributes. Access to the beach on wooden footpaths now serves the two beach fronts, to the south and east.

Signs indicating the natural values of the island, requests for precautions to be taken. Cans for cigarette butts, benches for resting. Everything is much better.

But what you notice most when you compare current photos with old photos of the island is that the houses are all being renovated. More resistant materials, everything is better and more beautiful. 

The gardens are improved. It is not rare to see green gardens, with automatic watering. 

The restaurants are more modern, with better services.

Just look at the Belgian terrace, as we used to say.

Now it's called LanaCosta and it's a fabulous restaurant.

A little more expensive than the others, but the service is top notch.

A recolha de lixos é diária, com contentores separados para reciclagem, há funcionários da autarquia a varrer os corredores, tudo parece funcionar bem.

Se é tudo maravilhoso?
Nada é totalmente fantástico.
Sim, ainda se veem pessoas com cães que fazem os dejetos nos caminhos e não os apanham... 
À noite há quem não respeite e passe nos corredores aos gritos, ouvindo-se tudo nas casas.
Ainda se descobre lixo nas praias. 

Mas, no geral, tudo tem melhorado.

Por exemplo, se se olhar das passadeiras de madeira, na praia, verificamos que a vegetação nas dunas está cada vez maior.
Esse é um excelente sinal.
A ilha está a ganhar vida.
Sempre que o homem não 'mete o bedelho' num espaço, a natureza trata de se regenerar sozinha.
É sempre assim. E na ilha é igual.

Outro dado novo. Uns pássaros grandes, tamanho dos pombos, preto e brancos. Fazem muito ruído, tipo gralhas. 
Veem-se imensos na ilha. 
Frequentam os pinheiros do nosso quintal.
Nunca tinha visto, confesso. Uma novidade de 2022.

À noite também se veem baratas na rua... 

Rubbish collection is daily, with separate bins for recycling, there are council staff sweeping the corridors, everything seems to work well.

Is it all wonderful?

Nothing is totally fantastic.

Yes, you still see people with dogs littering the paths and not picking them up. 

At night there are still people who don't respect and walk down the corridors shouting, and you can hear everything in the houses.

You still find rubbish on the beaches. 

But, in general, everything has improved.

For example, if you look at the wooden walkways on the beach, you can see that the vegetation on the dunes is getting bigger and bigger.

This is an excellent sign.

The island is coming alive.

Whenever man doesn't 'meddle' in an area, nature tries to regenerate itself.

It's always like that. And it's the same on the island.

Another new fact. Some big birds, the size of pigeons, black and white. They make a lot of noise, like crows. 

You see a lot of them on the island. 

They frequent the pine trees in our backyard.

I've never seen them before, I must confess. A novelty for 2022.
